AWD Motorcycle Project -- View Project Photo Gallery

The creation of this project stems from racing in the rain almost every weekend of 2008 Hare Scramble Series. My first race of the season started off with a 2004 Yamaha WR450F. Though bike was more than adequate for the task, you would want to make sure that fees were paid with CAA . Because after 2 hrs. of tight woods riding, you would need a tow truck or 3 men and a baby to help you pick it up when you dropped it. It was immediately replaced with a light and nimble 2008 KTM 300 XCW, a proven 2 stroke woods bike in every way. But after road racing for 10 yrs, and following that with woods riding solely on 4 strokes, I found it difficult to get comfortable with the 2 stroke power, even with the 2 power curves. So, I opted for a 2009 KTM 450 XCF.

Since I was on my 3rd bike in as many of months, I felt compelled to throw the cat another canary. I made a call to the people at Christini AWD. After a few calls back and forth, they indicated to me that only 1 other KTM 450XCF had been converted. The previous KTM’s were 2 stroke, with different frames. They then called me back with the good news, to move forward with this project.

I opted to purchase a new frame from KTM and an up graded set of WP forks and shipped them off to Christini, instead of pulling this bike apart and having a box of parts sitting in the corner. From the get go, I was given the heads up that it would be a while before I would see my new frame. In hind sight I was glad I did. This now, turned into a winter project. So I pulled the engine and swapped out the crank, connecting rod, cylinder, piston and cams. I now have the world’s only KTM 505 XCF All Wheel Drive motorcycle!

My new frame and forks have now arrived, and I would like to thank the Canadian Border Services. They did an outstanding job collecting money for the same parts twice. The 1st time when the frame and forks came across stock, and the 2nd time after they were modified. At first glance, this is very impressive. Very well engineered, lots of cnc components, anodized and carbon fiber parts.

Onto the transformation, it took about 4hrs. for the bulk of the transfer, and maybe 2hrs. of fine tuning. (truing wheel) Wiring harness, cables, rad mods, Recluse clutch, Pivot Pegs, Pro Taper bars etc. I would like to thank all who helped with this project, in alphabetical order;
